Two development projects involving the City of Tacoma will be honored by the Washington State Chapter of NAIOP (Commercial Real Estate Development Association) at the chapter’s annual awards program Friday, Nov. 5. The Center for Urban Waters will be honored as Public Project of the Year, and Pacific Plaza, a public-private partnership, is a finalist for several awards to be announced that night.

The Center for Urban Waters was selected for a special Public Project of the Year award along with Lake Union Park in Seattle.

The Center for Urban Waters is a 51,000-square-foot building housing City of Tacoma Environment Services labs and offices, University of Washington Tacoma researchers and Puget Sound Partnership staff. It is located across from downtown Tacoma on the east side of the Thea Foss Waterway at 326 East D Street. The facility was designed to LEED Platinum standards, but certification is not yet complete.

Last month Pacific Plaza Development LLC, the private development company formed to redevelop Pacific Plaza in collaboration with the City of Tacoma, received a national Sustainable Development Award for building renovation at the NAIOP’s national meeting in Orlando.

In the state awards to be announced Friday, Pacific Plaza / Pacific Plaza Development LLC is a finalist in six categories:  Developer of the Year, Community Impact, Market Adaptation, Mixed Use Development of the Year, Office Development of the Year, and Redevelopment/Renovation of the Year.

Pacific Plaza, 1250 Pacific Ave., is a high-end office building that began life in the 1960s as Tacoma’s South Park Plaza Garage. The renovated mixed-use facility has 35,000 square feet of street-level space and 74,000 square feet of Class A office space. The parking structure has been retrofitted to add 102 parking stalls to the existing 381 stalls. The core and shell of the building have been certified LEED Platinum.

Winners will be announced Friday, Nov. 5, at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue when NAIOP holds its 2010 “Night of the Stars” awards gala. More information is available at www.naiopwa.org.
